For a boutique resort on Kenya’s coast, we designed a series of tensile shade structures to enhance guest comfort and the resort’s aesthetic appeal. These included large free-form shade sails over the beach bar and lounge area, and stylish parasols around the pool deck. Each structure was designed to withstand the salty, windy coastal environment – using stainless steel fittings and a PTFE-coated fabric that resists mold and UV damage. The shapes of the canopies mimic ocean waves, tying into the seaside theme.
Value delivered:
The resort can now offer sun protection to guests during the heat of the day, increasing bar and pool usage, and the visual design has become a marketing highlight in the resort’s brochures. Success factors included our tailored design for coastal climate, careful coordination with the resort’s schedule to avoid disrupting guests during installation, and on-time completion before the peak holiday season. The client reported higher guest satisfaction and even extended their engagement with us for future phases.
Neutral Color Palette:
A minimalist color scheme of whites, grays, and muted tones will dominate. Accents of wood, metal, and glass will be incorporated to add warmth and texture without overwhelming the space.
Furniture and Decor:
Sleek, functional furniture with clean lines will be chosen. There will be minimal decoration, with only select statement pieces such as artwork or sculptures that align with the minimalist aesthetic. Multi-functional furniture (like storage-integrated seating) will be used to maintain tidiness.
Natural Light:
Large windows, glass doors, and strategically placed skylights will ensure an abundance of natural light, enhancing the sense of space and promoting energy efficiency.
